Updated Samsung Galaxy I7500 to Android 1.6-final thoughts!

In last post, i mentioned a step by step tutorial on how you can update your Galaxy with I7500XEFJB2 Leaked firmware. ( With Android 1.6, supposedly partially official ).
There are a lot of enhancements that i promised to report. First thing that instantly got to me was the speed. It was definitely more stable now. :) I strongly recommend this update to every Samsung I7500 user.

Few things i noticed after the Update :
- Visible Speed Improvements – While browsing and opening up of apps, setting wallpaper, etc. :)
- Lock key works as it is supposed to! – Lock key is really responsive now. With instant lock and appearance of Lock screen on the press of Lock key.
- Switchers app has been Replaced by Power Control Widget. – With power control widget, you have a bar with options to turn on and off services like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Brightness, GPS and Auto-Sync. Just tap the icons to turn them on and off. Really nifty. :)
- Google search widget is now configurable. – you can now search your apps, bookmarks, history, files, music with the default Google search widget on the homescreen. :)
- Camera Interface is revamped. – It’s just the re-skinning of Camera interface where no options are yet added. But you get a smaller screen to look at while clicking and you can switch to video shooting with the swype of the tab in the interface. I personally didn’t like the skin, where i had less screen space to look at what i was shooting.

- Flash is stronger. – You would definitely notice a stronger flash with the new update. :)
- Images are sharper – Images are a bit sharper than before, you might or might not notice it.
- I can play, Speed Forge 3D without much lag now, so perhaps better 3D support. :)
- Google Maps can be upgraded to 4.0 through market.
- New Market – You can see screenshots of Apps, before you download.
- No other visible change. ( Let me know in comments, if m missing something. )

These are the changes which are included in New firmware, but if you ask me personally i think these changes don’t describe the user experience it has leveraged through this Update. You would definitely get a better user experience through this update. And you have a lot more apps to install with Android 1.6 which were not present for Android 1.5. But, still if you are speculative enough, and been waiting for Android 2.1, you would be really disappointed with this update. I mean you would really feel envy of Samsung Spica I5700, who already got the Android 2.1 update and it really looks cool. Hope Samsung doesn’t abandon the development of Update for the First Android Phone in their League. :|

Few Things i didn’t like in this update (BUGS) :
- The Power control app sometimes doesn’t show the correct indication if the service is on or off. Like if you turn on you wi-fi through settings you won’t notice the effect on the power control widget at the homescreen and vice-versa. Although, this happened to me only once since i updated the Galaxy I7500 to I7500XEFJB2. But still thats an issue.
- Bluetooth still doesn’t work. :(
Nothing else is yet noticed by me. So it means, perhaps a much stable release. Will keep updating it, with the bugs i’l find. :) Let us know, if you’ve found something. Comments are always appreciated. :)

    Hi Manish,

I googled for Galxay android update and got this URL:
    http://opensource.samsungmobile.com/download/OpenSource/GT-I7500_OpenSource_U

Manish, please can you help me with this upgrade. I don’t know what version this is and i have no idea about how to install this on my GT7500.
    Thanks.

    • That is source Code for Samsung Galaxy GT-I7500.
If you want to install Android 1.6 on your Samsung Glaaxy GT-I7500, please Refer to my Step by Step Guide on Upgrading your Samsung Galaxy I7500 to Android 1.6. ( Please Use Search to find the Post, or else let me know, i’ll direct you there! )

hey manish!! could u plz give me the settings for using gprs in ma galaxy!! i use vodafone!! i hav saved the apn as portalnmms nd the name as vodafone live, then saved it!! after this i could see “E” on the notification bar mentioning edge connectivity!! but i cant do anything!! plz help!! thanks in advance!!

    • I guess, you should ask Vodafone Customer Care in your region for it. And you don’t have to bother bout manually setting it up! And it more than just portalnmms and vodafone live. So, it’s not connecting presently, but since you have activated and save apn settings, it’s showing you the E ( EDGE sign ) on the notification bar of your phone. But there won’t be any data download i guess!

help!!.. after using odin 3.95 and flashing to 1.6…it just displays SAMSUNG and does not boot. ODIN showed PASS and the phone is refusing to boot up.

    • I think you need to boot your phone in the Recovery Mode and do a Factory Reset. Please read the Tutorials carefully and also the comments section.
And if that doesn’t help, please let me know, i’ll try to help you. :)

  • yazidkhan says:

hi manish would u plz help me to connect my gt i7500 to the ad-hoc network of ma laptop!!

    • You want to connect your Samsung Galaxy I7500 to your Laptop’s Ad-Hoc Network? Thats as simple as connecting it to any other wi-fi network, but the question is why do you wan’t to connect it to the Ad-Hoc Network? I don’t see any benefits! Let me know if you can’t share, but that would help as i think you mis understood some thing and that is why you want to do this!

      • yazidkhan says:

@manish!! its b’coz i dont have a wifi router in ma hostel!! so if i neeed to access internet in ma phone then i need a wifi connectivity(GPRS not workin)!! hence i made a ad-hoc network on ma dell 1440 laptop!! the ad hoc network is working perfectly as my friends can access internet in their laptops and even in nokia and samsung mobiles(only these were tested)!! the radio type shown is 802.11bg!!! i have an option to make the radio type 802.11b only!! still its not working!! plz do give some suggestion!! some how i need to access internet on ma phone!! hope this would clear ur doubts!! thanks man!! dont forget abt the Bluetooth!!

      • Yes, the Radio type is 802.11b only in all the mobile devices you see till date! M working on Bluetooth, will let you know, if i could make something out of my experiments. :)
And bout the Ad-Hoc Connection, i don’t think there should be any other setting to it. It should directly detect the Ad-Hoc Connection as it detects any other Wi-Fi Connection. Will Try and replicate your situation here and will let you know. :)
Btw, it does not detect the Ad-Hoc Network or it does not connect to it? Or it connects but, you can’t connect to the Internet?

      • yazidkhan says:

it does n0ot detect the ad hoc network with its default wifi search!! but i can see the network with the help of a 3rd party app called as “wifi analyzer”!! but with tat i cannot connect to the network!! is there any other app which can search and connect the wifi??? happy to knw tat u r working on the bluetooth bug!!

      • Try the We-Fi App for Android, it is very nifty app for finding the best Wi-Fi around and connecting to it. Let me know if that works for you. :)

      • yazidkhan says:

@Manish!! nope dude!! its not working!! never mind am gettin a router in 2 days!!

      • M sorry! But m a bit busy lately so, can’t seem to do much about that! It’s nice to know that you’re finally getting a router and you need no workaround to have internet access on your Phone! Congrats! :)

      • yazidkhan says:

thanks man!! looking forward a lot frm u!!

      • Saket says:

        Hi Manish,
I want to connect to internet on my laptop using my phone. Can it be done using a Wifi. I have a Wifi router and good Edge connection on phone. The problem i saw was as soon as i connect to a wifi network my phone disconnects from the edge network. so either the wifi or the edge connection works.

        thanks
        Saket

      • You just need the phone to be Rooted to get it working for you! ( No Wi-Fi Router Required! )
If you are using Samsung Galaxy GT-I7500, consider this guide if you want to root your Android Phone!

        P.S.
Please Consider reading the tutorial and understanding it before you actually proceed to do it. :)

  • Julius says:

    Hi Manish
Where can I download the stock firmware which is 1.5 for galaxy. I am facing some problems wid my phone and want to get it repaired under warranty. I dont thinkk I can get it serviced under warranty if I have I7500XEFJB2 firmware.

    • They won’t/can’t deny you of the warranty if it has JB2 firmware on your Samsung Galaxy Gt-I7500. You can always tell them that, NEW PC Suite updated it to this Firmware and it is 100% legal.
And there is no source of original Firmware of Galaxy Gt-I7500!

  • Anirrudha says:

    Hi Manish,
How do I set this phone to use BSNL 3G services, somewhere I found that —
    1. Make sure your PHONE is set to work on 3G network ie. in my phone, to use 3G network, I had to select “WCDMA” in my network mode settings. You should see “3G” written somewhere on your phone screen if it is connected to 3G network.
    2. Now depending upon the phone, goto Connection settings, there create new connection profile and now you are only required to specify APN and you are done.
APN stands for “ACCESS POINT NAME” . You are required to specify following APN for BSNL 3G settings:
    gprsnorth3g.bsnlmobile.in—
but how i can set WCDMA ?

I have recently updated to Donut (1.6). But I’ve read that Drakaz released a custom ROM, Galaxo 1.6.3.3 which is a lot faster. Do you recommend updating to it? Will I loose any functionality of my phone (camera, GPS, wifi, etc)? If you recommend this update, how do I do it if I’m already 1.6 (current guides are from 1.5)?

  • faizan says:

hey can i use this firmware to flash if i am using galaxo
