Xperia X10 family Android 2.1,Eclair Update on Oct 31-Gradual roll out throughout November

Sony Ericsson finally came out a date and time for our Xperia X10’s Android 2.1, Eclair Update from Android 1.6, Donut! Through Sony Ericsson Product Blog, Sony Ericsson declared that the Android 2.1 Updates for Xperia X10 family including Xperia X10, Xperia X10 Mini, Xperia X10 Mini Pro ( Xperia X8 not included ), will begin from Oct 31st 2010 evening!

The Blog is down due to heavy server load perhaps, so let me quote the whole thing for you! πŸ™‚

Today I can confirm that we will start the roll-out of the Android 2.1 based updates for Xperia X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro now this coming Sunday. The roll out will start in the evening European time.

So far I have received confirmation that the generic kits for the Nordic countries will be the very first ones out on Sunday evening and then there will be more kits coming already during Monday and then the roll-out will continue throughout the month of November.

As said earlier these updates will give you some features introduced by Android 2.1 and the Xperia X10 will also get HD-video recording in 720p with continuous auto focus.
The changes in user experience after the update is a mix of things added or changed going from Android 1.6 to Android 2.1 and things changed or improved by us directly.

As a re-cap – The key changes for the different products are the following:
Xperia X10:
β€’ HD video recording with continuous auto-focus for high quality videos
β€’ Upgrade of the Android platform to Android 2.1
β€’ New back up and restore application, with extended content back up
β€’ 5 homescreens for apps, widgets, shortcuts and folders
β€’ Social phonebook which automatically syncs contact pictures from Facebook and shows when your friends are online

Xperia X10 mini and X10 mini pro:
β€’ Improved Bluetooth functionality with support for sending and receiving pictures, contacts and more
β€’ New backup and restore application with extended content back up
β€’ Automatic synchronization of your contact pictures between Facebook and your phone book
β€’ Improved ways of handling pictures, audio, text and numbers in your messages
β€’ Upgrade of the Android platform to Android platform 2.1

In most markets, your phone will automatically let you know with a notification when the update is ready for your specific software version and then you will be guided to how to perform the update using the PC Companion software. In that process, because of this being a big update, you will also be guided through some steps to be able to backup personal data before the update and then restore it when the update is finished. IMPORTANT: As I’ve pointed out previously here on the blog the software upgrade will be done in a phased roll-out which means that different β€œkits” gets the update at different times. This to secure quality in all networks and countries. So don’t get paranoid if your phone isn’t updated in the very first days – it will come!

What we mean by a β€œkit” is a different configuration, i.e. color of the phone, bundled accessories but most importantly in this case different software configurations. The difference in software between different kits is mainly related to included settings, applications, network configuration etc – all this to comply to different legal and network requirements. All of these different kits need separate approvals based on market and network, hence the phased roll-out.
I will try to keep track of which versions that get released continuously and will post updates when new markets or β€œkits” become available. Feel free to share your findings in the comments section here when you get the update for your phone!

The most important thing to notice here is the Gradual Roll out process of the Update! They are barely making it for OCt End Release they promised earlier and the update will continue to roll out throughout November! So, theres a catch here! If you are on a branded Xperia X10 ( branded by Network ) don’t expect the update anything before November end! And for those who are not in Sweden or european countries, you might also get the update by Mid Nov!

In India, i talked to the Sony Ericsson Service Center guys, they told me it would be somewhere around Dec! I don’t believe those guys at all and my friend said Customer Support over the Phone said it would in First Week of November! Either ways, it’s delay for us and many other Countries and regions out there! The Gradual roll out nature of the Eclair update for Xperia X10 is bound to frustrate customers out there!
I will try to find some solution and Tricks to get the update as early as possible in any region! I guess the De-branding method won’t work anymore!
Will also post Tips and Tricks for the Upgrade and how to Upgrade! Full Changelog of the Eclair update and other related content will be posted soon!

    1. Un-root using the method which you rooted! It would flash it back to your Firmware! And alternatively search the blog from top right corner for New Method of De-branding Xperia X10 to Original Generic Firmware Files! πŸ™‚

  1. Hey Manish,
Try cutting down on the usage of exclamation marks. They’re only there to make an exceptional point.
Your blog is pretty awesome, keep up the great work. ^.^

  2. Hi Manish,

I’m a fan of your blog and visited every day just to track news of the X10.

well, I have a X10a rooted and de-branded, how can I get the update to 2.1?

I really sorry for my english… Im from Mexico.

    Keep working as well!!

  3. Good post as usual! Now I know you have very little info to work with but I have a question. My phone states I’m running: Model X10a, Country: Generic, Brand: Customized

There’s no release date info posted other than whats in the article so I’m not going to ask that, but rather, what region would my phone fall under? Originally bought from a Canadian carrier and I debranded and root by using the following method:

Only problem is, I’m not sure what region I fall under right now.

      1. Ah sorry. The post on the SE Blog has been a big let down in terms of information given, such as: release date for the rest of the world, global generic release date, if the boot loader will be even more difficult to crack, etc. Basically it seems that Sony Ericsson were desperate to have an update ready for the end of the month, which they do (only for a certain region), but they haven’t gone into further detail. Many people on this blog and the SE Blog have many unanswered questions.

  4. Can I update using just my mobile(OTA) or the PC companion a must?? coz the only internet connection i use is the mobile tethered πŸ™

and BTW, it’s nice to see the notify on comments check box but it’s still not working…

    1. You’ll get the update notification on your phone that the update is available and you’ll have to connect it to SEUS/ PC Companion to update your Xperia X10. The Update would be around 164Mb, so it’s not feasible to update it over the air. Plus it will require a complete system wipe, which is not recommended to be done on the phone itself.
And thank you for the input on the comments notification system. I’ll try to look into it and fix it asap!

  5. hi Manish

really like your blog alot n its amazing
can u plz give me an idea when i will be getting my update
    my model info is
    global generic
    r2ba028 generic software

    in China right now
ant idea when i will get the update???

    1. Sorry, but i don’t have any info on which region will get the update first or how the update will be rolled out throughout all the regions! But will try to find a way to flash the Global generic version as soon as the update is rolled out. And thank you for your kind words, do let us know, what would you like to hear most from us. Any suggestions, complains, ideas to improve or any kind of input is highly appreciated. πŸ™‚

  6. How to check whether the contact is saved in SIM card or phone memory. When updated to 2.1, will the things in SD card be wiped out too? I don’t plan to backup my apps since there’s a lot apps I never use and I tend to reinstall only the apps that I’ll be using after I update to 2.1,

    1. No Only Phone settings, Contacts, SMS, MMS, BookMarks, Call Log and all Installed apps will be wiped. Anything stored on SD Card will not be wiped. All your contacts shown in your phone are in your phone only. Theres no option to view only SIM Card Contacts. You can backup your contacts over the air using SE Sync or Gmail. And for remote methods you can use MyPhoneExplorer or PC suite. Search the blog for more info on MyPhoneExplorer or PC suite. πŸ™‚
And for apps, yes there would many compatibility issues as well. Many apps that support Android 1.6 doesn’t support Android 2.1 or above or have a different version for Android 2.1 and above!
