Sony Ericsson was accused of not updating their Xperia Lineup ( Xperia X10, Xperia X10 Mini, Mini Pro, X8 ) last year. Last year, Sony Ericsson launched their Xperia Series on Android 1.6, Donut with huge UI customization that they called as UXP ( User eXPerience – No it was not just Timescape n Mediascape! ) Later during the years end, they updated the Xperia Series with Android 2.1 which became almost as obsolete as Android 1.6 was at the Xperia series launch. Sony Ericsson learned a good lesson of it. And they announced that their new Xperia 2011 series will not have deeper UI customization which will enable them to provide timely OS updates. And they are right on the money this time.
Sony Ericsson is about to update Xperia Play & Arc to Latest Android Gingerbread 2.3.3. I know latest Gingerbread is Android 2.3.4, announced in May 2011. As per, official Android Blog,
Android 2.3.4 is a maintenance release that adds several bug fixes and patches to the Android 2.3 platform, without any API changes from Android 2.3.3
For now SE will provide Gingerbread 2.3.3 to Xperia Play & Xperia Arc. And most probably Xperia Neo & Xperia Pro will launch with Android Gingerbread 2.3.3 and Facebook Inside Xperia. More about Facebook Inside Xperia Later. If sources from recombu is to be believed, Xperia Play & Xperia Arc is getting this update starting from Next Week.
In a Promotion Presentation by SE, they said the new Facebook Inside Xperia will add deeper integration of Fb Features inside 2011 Xperia Lineup by Sony Ericsson. Liking music currently playing on your phone will send an update to your Facebook feed, which can be clicked through for more information via Sony Ericsson’s TrackID, whilst photos can be uploaded and now downloaded and kept on your phone. FAcebook calenders will be synced as well. Phone contacts will get a deeper sync action with interests & Likes, not just the Status Updates. Don’t Panic, you can turn all these features on & off according to your needs. You can either turn off all the integration or just the ones you don’t like. Quite handy!
To quote from recombu on what a Sony Ericsson rep said to them at the presentation,
Calum MacDougall, Head of Web Service Partnerships at Sony Ericsson told us that Facebook inside Xperia was not about making a ”Facebook phone” but “enriching the experience” of using the phone alongside Facebook’s features.
MacDougall also said that these embedded Facebook features would be an ongoing project- but that it would focus on Sony Ericsson’s strength in entertainment, and vowed they wouldn’t look to replicate features that already worked well on the original Facebook app.
There was no details provided, if the firmware upgrade will be Over the Air ( OTA ) or will it be available through SEUS? We will let you know as soon as we get more details about it. Stay tuned to get further updates. Next there will be details on the Facebook Inside Xperia. You’ll learn on what features Sony Ericsson Included in it and how you can fully utilize those features according to your needs.
